Shippensburg Area Intermediate School is proud of the 5th grade students that graduated from the DARE program this past week.  We had a wonderful DARE graduation ceremony on Tuesday evening.  Each classroom had their essay winner honored at the ceremony.  Students read their essays, pledging to make positive decisions for the future.  Students received a certificate and a DARE t-shirt. Thank you to Corporal Jeff Shubert and Sergeant Pat Taylor for their continued support of the program and the community support that makes the program possible!

Lydia Wallace the SASHS Blood Drive Coordinator with the American Red Cross has notified us that Emma Torija is one of just 3 Pennsylvanian high school  students who have completed the Level 3 requirements for the High School Leadership Program. This is quite an accomplishment!  Emma has helped to coordinate the High School blood drive for three years and even held her own drive this past summer.  She is the president of Student Council, a member of the National Honor Society, and a student representative to the school board and Shippensburg Chamber of Commerce.  We are proud of you, Emma!

January is School Director Recognition Month
Pennsylvania public schools educate nearly 2 million students and 3,420 are in the Shippensburg Area School District.  Each one of those students has an individual story and a different path they are taking into adulthood. The roads to success are as varied as the students, but they are not traveling this path alone. Parents, teachers, administrators, school bus drivers, classroom assistants, coaches, and all support staff all play a vital role in the success of students.

In January, we also pause to salute another group of nine people who spend dozens of hours each month voluntarily leading our schools and making difficult decisions – they are the school directors.  These elected officials spend countless hours reviewing budgets, approving curriculum and textbook choices, adopting policy, and evaluating the academic and operational results of the district. They are our neighbors, friends, community leaders and engaged senior citizens doing a necessary job for the benefit of our children.  As we continue to celebrate the success stories in our schools, let’s not forget our elected school directors who play a significant role in creating the environment where those successes can happen.  Please take a moment to thank your School Board members when you see them or give them a call or send an email.  Pennsylvania has 4,500 school directors with its 500 school districts.

The Volvo Path (sidewalk) is almost complete at the rear of the Shippensburg High school property.  See the attached pictures.  Volvo Path is the result of a School-Business Partnership with Volvo and the school district.  SASD provided the real estate and Volvo provided the materials and labor to install the sidewalk.  It will be used by Volvo employees to walk between the plant and the Customer Care Center and by students/athletes, primarily the Cross-Country team.

More progress!

RE:  Rebecca Laubs & Patricia Mari

Information shared courtesy of Randy and Marcie Taylor, Drew Michael Taylor Foundation

I wanted to express my appreciation to SASHS senior students, Rebecca Laubs and Patricia Mari.  Both of these outstanding young ladies volunteered with our Drew’s Hope grief support program during our seven fall sessions as part of the community service hours required of N:ational Honor Society students.  These young ladies were such a help to our organization and the grieving families that we serve.  They assisted with meal set up, serving and tear down and they provided childcare and any other assistance that was needed during our grief support sessions.  Both young ladies plan to come back and volunteer with our Spring 2017 sessions too.

We cannot stress enough how grateful we are for their help and we wanted to make you aware of it.  Kudos to Mrs. Lawrence and the National Honor Society students (especially Rebecca and Patricia) for being so generous with their time and talents.

The Shippensburg Area School District collected items for the Ronald McDonald House coordinated by Mr. Hoover and Mrs. Yost, Middle School Physical Education teachers , for the 2nd year in a row. They have organized this event in their Physical Education classes during their basketball unit and Hoops for Heart.  Because of the huge outpouring by the District,  they had to rent a U Haul truck to collect all the items for the RMH and deliver them right before Christmas.  "Our student's take a lot of pride in helping families out that may need it, especially over the holiday," says Mr. Hoover.  The donations will be able to help hundreds of families that stay at the Ronald McDonald House while their love ones are at Hershey Medical Center.

Kudos to all involved!!
