Paws Applause:

Danny Kennedy (7th grade SAMS) traveled to the State Museum in Harrisburg today for the State National Geographic Bee. He participated in eight difficult rounds and did very well. He was one point away from a tie breaker round before finals. He will not be moving to finals this year. However, he was a winner before he even walked in the door this morning. He came with his game face on and to showcase his Geographic knowledge. We are all so proud of him. He is being such a good sport that he is staying to watch the final round! He positively represented our district today; he was very safe, respectful, prepared and caring. Way to go Danny!

Kudos to Danny and Coach Vergne!!

This past weekend Ms. Campbell and Mrs. Lawrence had the pleasure of taking Shippensburg high school students to the regional Science Olympiad Competition at Millersville University. This competition is aimed at exciting students for future careers in STEM fields. Our students built structures that were tested (such as robot arms, towers made of balsa wood, hovercrafts, electric vehicles, and helicopters), took challenging written exams in many fields (microbiology, astronomy, anatomy/physiology), and did hands-on labs (forensics, experimental design, chemistry) during this exciting day.

We are proud to report that our students earned medals in five of the division C events.

Ryzeson Maravich and Noah Stewart: 4th place in Anatomy and Physiology

Becca Light and Iris Kennedy: 2nd place in Chemistry Lab

Chandler Olson and Iris Kennedy: 4th place in Dynamic Planet

Emma Torija and Chandler Olson: 4th place in Electric Vehicle

Nancy Grayson Elementary School Achieves 99% Rating in School Climate/Culture!

Nancy Grayson Elementary School has recently been recommended for state recognition as implementing Tier I Positive Behavior Intervention and Supports (PBIS) with high fidelity. On 2/28/17, the school welcomed two state evaluators from PaTTAN’s PBIS Initiative to complete the School-wide Evaluation Tool (SET), which is one tool used to ensure that schools are implementing features of Tier I PBIS with fidelity. The state evaluators that attended Nancy Grayson Elementary Schoo...l reviewed permanent products (including survey data collected throughout prior years), conducted observations, and interviewed staff, students, and the building administrator. Following their assessment, the PaTTAN evaluators concluded that “…the school is working hard to promote positive behavior among students. It is clear that this effort is currently engrained in the culture of the school.” For state recognition, a school must achieve 80% or higher overall score on the SET; Nancy Grayson Elementary School scored 99% on the overall SET. Nancy Grayson Elementary School will be formally recognized at the PBIS Implementers’ Forum held in Hershey in May 2017.

Congratulations to everyone at NGES for this recognition!! A special thanks to the PTO and local businesses who support the PBIS program with incentives!

Greyhound Wrestlers Have Outstanding Season

Chandler Olson finished 5th Saturday at PIAA State wrestling finals. Chandler has medaled all four years of his wrestling career in the PIAA State Tournament. That is quite an accomplishment.

He also set the school record with 147 career wins.

Unfortunately Cole Forrester and Cameron Tinner did not advance to the medal round. However, they both finished in the top 12 of the PIAA State Tournament.

This is the first time in the history of the school that Ship has sent three wrestlers to the PIAA State Tournament.

Go Greyhounds!

Reading Across America and Dr. Seuss' birthday were celebrated throughout the Shippensburg Area School District earlier today!

Shippensburg Schools recognize and promote the power of reading day in and day out!  We encourage parents and grandparents to continue to read with their children/grandchildren, take them to the public library, provide reading material via books, subscriptions, and/or provide gift cards to a bookstore from time to time, etc.

High reading skills provide dividends for life!

Students in veteran teachers, Mrs. Barrick's and Mrs. Wolfe's, and Student Teachers, Ms. Everhart's and Ms. Herr's, 2nd grade classrooms listen to several Dr. Seuss books being read by Ship Business Manager, Mrs. Lentz, and Ship Superintendent, Dr. Mummau.
