SAIS has multiple classrooms that created themes to discuss how to stop bullying, strategies to help students in need, and include all students in our activities. The posters send a positive message to our students, and serve as a good reminder of our 3 rules….Be Respectful, Be Responsible, Be Safe.
See the attached pics.
Received word a short time ago that the strike with the
State Universities has ended and classes and other activities will resume
effective tomorrow (Saturday).
Thanks to all involved for the hard work that was put in to
re-scheduling our Dual Enrollment students, the folks who filled in at GBLUES,
and others who changed their routines and duties because of the strike.

Just in case you haven’t heard, the School Performance
Profile ratings were released yesterday. Below are the results of each of
the Shipp schools.
Grades K-8 had no SPP scores for last year due to the reset
with the new standards. Teachers are reviewing their own PVAAS data and
making adjustments as needed as we move forward in a spirit of continuous
improvement.
Please spread the good news and take time to CELEBRATE each
schools’ successes! (hear the theme song to “The Jeffersons” playing in the
background!)
Enjoy the weekend ahead! Take time to enjoy the fall
foliage too!

Nancy Grayson's first grade went to Reynolds' pumpkin farm today. Before we left, Mrs. Reynolds talked to me about our students. Her family has been impressed with the children in both buildings. She said every year our students are respectful to their property. She commended the teachers in both buildings for teaching the students about pumpkins prior to their trip. They always know the answers to her questions. They look forward to seeing our students every year. I think this is a great compliment to how both buildings connect our instruction of curriculum to the field trip we attend each year!

RE: Potential Strike
by the Shippensburg University Faculty
Student Teachers
from Shippensburg University
You are most likely aware that the faculty of
Shippensburg University, who are represented by the Association of Pennsylvania
State College and University Faculty (APSCUF), have declared a strike notice
set to begin next Wednesday, October 19. Negotiations are continuing and
we are hopeful that the dispute will be resolved and a strike will be avoided.
We do not know how long a strike may last but are hopeful that it will be of
short duration.
We are requesting that the student teachers with placements in your district be
permitted to continue their student teaching experience under the direction of
the district teacher(s) to whom they have been assigned. They will
most likely not be visited by their university supervisor for the duration of
the strike. However, we would like the student teacher’s day-to-day
experience to continue uninterrupted. We believe this is best for our
student teachers as well as for the teachers and students in your district with
whom they are working. Each teacher with an assigned student has received
a letter from me similar to this one.
In regard to SASD K-5 students who attend GBLUES.
Grace B. Luhrs
University Elementary School
In the event a strike does occur on October 19, 2016, or
thereafter, we have a Plan A and a Plan C in place as follows.
Plan A: GBLUES will be open/operate on
regular hours. SASD will secure 3 substitutes to teach K, 1, and 2 since
those faculty members are University faculty. A SU Administrator will
serve as the school Administrator during this time.
Plan C: If there is a hostile
environment on campus (hopefully not) or a hostile environment is anticipated
and thus the educational environment is not good for our K-5 students who
attend GBLUES or the school is inaccessible for any reason, we will cancel
school on the strike day(s) for GBLUES students only and an
additional day(s) will be added on at the end of the school year for GBLUES
students only. The school district will make this announcement, if
necessary, by 6 AM on October 19th and sooner if possible. A
robo-call will be sent out to GBLUES families and all SASD employees, a message
will be posted on the District Homepage, and media outlets will be notified
similar to inclement weather notices.

The Shippensburg Area Intermediate School was notified last week that they met the eligibility criteria to be considered and recognized as a National Title I Distinguished School for the state of Pennsylvania! SAIS was identified as a Reward: High Progress School for this past school year, 2015-16, for the growth in PSSA scores. This recognition allows SAIS to apply for the opportunity to attend the National Title I conference in 2017. We are proud of the teachers, staff and students for their hard work and commitment to student achievement and growth!
Kudos to all at SAIS!!
Q: Why is a Section 780 Hearing necessary?
A: The State of Pennsylvania requires a Public Hearing before any public school can be closed. The PA Code provides a lengthy timeline which must be adhered to if this is the wish of the Board. The Board has stated that they wish to conduct the public hearing so that GBLUES can be an option on the table to balance the FY18 budget if needed. Because of the PA Code, they cannot wait until spring to begin the public hearing process.
Thank you for the inquiry.
Q: In regard to the Section 780 Hearing for the Grace B. Luhrs University Elementary School, will a business analysis be conducted? Will the Board look at the impact on the University, class sizes, buildings, etc?
A: Yes, the Administration will provide a presentation of the current status of our elementary schools and what the changes, if any, would look like in the future. The Administrative team has been directed to provide several options for re-alignment for the Board's consideration.
Just as a reminder, the Board will not be making a decision until the spring of 2017.
Paws Applause: Boys Soccer
Dear Dr. Mummau,
Soccer doesn't get the attention that other sports
receive in our district, but the support of our AD may lead to a much needed
change in the communities' mind set and opinion.
Greyhound soccer has great potential over the next
several years, and these student-athletes are working hard to represent SASD
well. Mike Montedoro's involvement and interest in the program is not going
unnoticed. He may simply be "doing his job," but to me his efforts
are making an impact on the players and the sport they love.

October 2016 Employee Spotlight - Mrs. Kelly Bier
Name and current position:
Kelly M. Bier
Agricultural Educator
Building(s) served:
Shippensburg Area Senior High School
High School attended:
Cumberland Regional High School – Seabrook, NJ
College(s) attended:
Shippensburg University – Bachelor of Science in Education, Elementary Education
North Carolina State University – Masters of Agricultural and Extension Education
Year started at SASD and position:
August 2005 – Agricultural Education
Most unusual incident on the job:
One day in February after it snowed, I reminded the FFA members that they should always clean snow off the roofs of their cars before going anywhere. That day we were headed to a conference in Harrisburg. As I was driving down 81, the snow slid forward from the roof of the school van and popped up the windshield wipers. I had to ride the rest of the way with the wipers up.
Extra assignments:
FFA Advisor
Pennsylvania South Central Regional FFA Coordinator
Hobbies:
In my spare time I like to spend time with my family, which includes my husband of 19 years, Lloyd, and my three dogs. We have a Great Dane, Saint Bernard, and a Black Lab. I also like to read.
Your hero:
My hero is my dad, Glenn Eachus. My dad is someone that I have always looked up to, and look to for guidance. He is very knowledgeable, and has the ability to do just about anything. He can heal a cow when she is sick, weld the fence when it’s broken, fix the tractor, have a high yielding field of corn, and have a high producing cow without using added hormones.
Pet peeve:
My pet peeve would have to be not using proper animal terms, for example, calling everything a cow.
Five minutes with:
If I could spend five minutes with anyone it would have to be my grandmother, Hannah Counsellor. My grandmom passed away before I was born, and so I think it would be a wonderful experience to meet her.
Favorite movie:
The Longest Ride
What would people find surprising about you?
I think what people would find most surprising about me is that I grew up on a dairy farm in southern New Jersey. While growing up in New Jersey on the farm, I was involved in 4-H, and FFA. I served as the New Jersey State FFA Parliamentarian after I graduated high school. It was through the State FFA Association that I met my husband. He was serving as a state officer for Pennsylvania FFA

Shippensburg Alumna, Karissa Fleagle Darius, sent the following letter to Mr. Levy recently and asked that it be shared. See her letter below which confirms that teachers both teach and inspire!!
Praise to Ms. Darius for taking the time to write and share this letter.
Boonsboro High
To the Faculty and Staff in the Shippensburg Area School District:
Hello, my name is Karissa Darius. Many of you may remember me by the name of Karissa Fleagle. I graduated
from SASD five years ago. Upon graduating high school, I attended Liberty University where I received my
B.S. in Mathematics. I am now going into my second year of teaching math at the high-school level. Becoming
an educator has opened my eyes to how much teachers actually do for their students. We love our students and
would do anything to help them succeed. We spend countless hours planning, grading, and planning some
more. Why do we do it? We do it because we want to make a difference in our students’ lives. With that, I
would like to say thank you to all the faculty and staff in the Shippensburg Area School District who have
invested time towards my education. Thank you for the countless hours you spent preparing for my classes.
Thank you for being passionate about your content and for being willing to pass that knowledge onto me.
Thank you for the awesome activities that you had me participate in over the years. You have made such a
huge impact in my life. You saw my potential, and you challenged me to be the best student and the best person
that I could be.
I would like to say a special thanks to the following. These were my core content teachers over the course of
my K-12 experience:
Elementary School:
Kindergarten - Ms. Luke - You were awesome. I wish I remembered more from that year.
1st Grade - Mrs. Cummings - You helped me grow a passion for reading.
2nd Grade - Mrs. Wolfe - You taught me how to spell the word bro-c-c-oli.
3rd Grade - Mrs. Garland - You made me feel proud when my scuba-diver had a lot of stickers to represent my
progress throughout the year.
4th Grade - Mr. Barrett - I was always terrified of getting you as a teacher because you were big and always
slammed your teaching stick against the chalkboard. Turns out, you were awesome and gave us candy.
5th Grade - Mrs. Barnhart - You helped me strive to do my best, and if my scores fell, you would say, “Wrong
way, peachfuzz.”

Boonsboro High
Middle School:
6th Grade - Mrs. Smith - You had us create cool projects and one of mine was about the effects of tornados.
6th Grade - Mrs. Davis - We wrote our own books that year. Mine was covered in velvet and I was so proud of
the story I had created. Also, team Megara won.
7th Grade - Ms. Johnson - You took on two long-term sub positions the year I had you, so I remember you as
both my awesome science teacher and as my awesome math teacher.
7th Grade - Ms. Reinhart - You came back from Asia and told us all kinds of stories from your trip. I thought it
was so cool that you went to a different country.
7th Grade - Mrs. Rotz - I had you for both math and homeroom, but for only half the year. You kept us up to
date on how you and the baby were doing during the second half of the year.
7th Grade - Mrs. Hoover - You inspired me to go above and beyond in English class. For one of our projects I
actually designed a T-shirt instead of just drawing on a paper cutout.
7th Grade - Mr. Bradford - I was always kept up-to-date on current events in your class because you made sure
that we were informed citizens.
8th Grade - Mrs. Leedy - My love for math really grew in your class. It was both challenging and rewarding.
8th Grade - Mr. Peters - Your class was awesome, but what I remember most was your enthusiasm about the
essay that I wrote that year. It was about my testimony and you made me feel so proud of my work.
8th Grade - Mr. Yocum - You made me feel important when you allowed me to grade quizzes for you as my
peers were finishing them.
8th Grade - Mr. Billings - I was so shocked when you showed us the sand that stayed dry even after being
submerged in water. Your class was an adventure.
High School:
9th Grade - Ms. Reed - You taught me about the different ecosystems and I was proud of the leaf-project we did
that year.

9th Grade - Ms. Minnich - I will always remember when you told us not to “ass-u-me” things.
9th Grade - Ms. Smith - You encouraged me to express my creative side when working on projects and poems.
9th Grade - Mr. Sassin - You always believed in my mathematical abilities. I absolutely loved Algebra 2.
10th Grade - Mr. Massara - You challenged me to memorize Brutus’ speech, and although it was terrifying to
have to recite it back to you, I’m glad that you forced me to step out of my comfort zone.
10th Grade - Mr. Kleese - You told my mom about a project I did for your class that you thought was amazing.
Your excitement about my project made me feel amazing as well.
10th Grade - Ms. Fahrney - Your class was where I had my first dose of proofs. Unfortunately those weren’t
the last.
11th Grade - Ms. Person - I always felt that you knew what it meant to relate with your students. It was never a
boring day when you kept us up-to-date on your brother’s wedding situation.
11th Grade - Mr. Stoops - It was in your class that I realized I was comfortable speaking in front of my peers.
11th Grade - Mrs. Cote-Glander - I was so honored to student-teach by your side. You were my role-model.
12th Grade - Ms. Stewart - You helped my sister and I launch a club; thank you for your support.
12th Grade - Ms. Shirk - You are an extremely talented cake decorator. More than that, I always knew that you
supported me.
12th Grade - Mr. Zahos - I enjoyed how enthusiastic you were about your subject.
12th Grade - Mr. Pelow - Calculus was challenging and fun. Thank you for preparing me for college calculus.
I know that there were many, many more teachers that I had the pleasure of learning from. If you taught me a
subject that was extra-curricular, I would like to thank you. It was the extra-curricular classes that allowed me
to explore and expand my additional talents. With that being said, thank you Ms. Seitz, Ms. Underkoffler, Ms.
Gimmi, Mr. Wilson, Ms. Holt, Mr. Stoner, Mrs. Shrawder, Mr. Hubert, Mr. Hoover, Mr. Hawbaker, Mrs.
Solder, Mrs. Riep, Mr. Piper, Ms. Simmers, Mrs. Waddell, Mr. Hunsecker, Ms. Akers, Mr. Bailey, Mr. Haller,

Robinson, Mr. Rosenberry, Mr. Chamberlain, Mr. Debias, Mr. Miller, Mr. Cleveland, Ms. Mowers, and Mr.
Staver. Even though some of these teachers are no longer with us, I would like to say thank you to all who
invested in my education.
If you worked in the lunchroom, on the custodial staff, or were my bus driver, I would like to thank you. If you
were my administrator, thank you.
I couldn’t have imagined a better K-12 education. You were there for me every step of the way, and I hope that
I can continue your legacy by being there for my own students. I hope I can teach them the way you taught me.
I hope I can love them the way you loved me. I hope I can challenge them the way you challenged me.
Never doubt your influence in the lives of your students.
