Paws Applause:

Picture:  Mr. Greg Herb, Reading Specialist/Literacy Coach accepts Grant check for $5,000 from Mr. Jim Illicete, Regional Supervisor for CenturyLink on behalf of the Nancy Grayson Elementary School.

CenturyLink through the Clark M. Williams Foundation supports an annual program called Teachers & Technology.  Across the United States, more than 2,300 grant applications were submitted and 309 were awarded based on the impact they will have on students in the classroom.  Eight Grants were awarded in PA totaling $32,283.

Mr. Herb’s grant is to form a Lego Robotics Club for the Shippensburg Elementary Schools.
The Lego Robotics Club’s will be focused on opportunities for children to learn about math, science, engineering, technology, language arts, and coding in a hands-on approach. This club will be focused on not only serving as an after school club available for ALL District second and third grade children to be a part of, but also the pilot program to integrating a STEM related project approach to learning in the entire school community.

The Lego Robotics Club will integrate Lego Wedo 2.0 and Lego Simple and Powered Machines technology to create the opportunity for STEM education in an early childhood format.  Lego Wedo 2.0 and Lego Simple and Powered Machines technology are very purposefully chosen for our school.  The Lego systems are highly tactile, child friendly, and structured to be beneficial for children in our age range.  These Lego systems create the potential for children to design, create and program Lego robotics machines to do simple/complex tasks.  The Lego engineering kits are directly connected to learning goals/standards for children to be competent 21st century learners for the job market of the future.
