Paws Applause:

On May 8, 2017, Shippensburg Area School District and Shippensburg University signed a five year Affiliation Agreement to continue the Grace B. Luhrs University Elementary Lab School partnership.  Highlights of the Agreement include transitioning the grade configuration to a K-3 school with two classes per grade and an enrollment of about 165 students by 2022.  The current configuration is K-5 with one class per grade with about 125 students enrolled.  The funding formula has remained the same, but the school district has agreed to provide instructional materials and classroom technology consistent with what is provided to James Burd and Nancy Grayson Elementary schools.  Increased collaboration and sharing of best practices among the three schools is also a cornerstone of the agreement.  A lottery process will continue to be used to determine student enrollment in the Luhrs school.  Students must reside within the Shippensburg School District boundaries and transportation is provided, if requested.

Signing the agreement are Dr. Barbara Lyman, Interim Shippensburg University President and Mark Buterbaugh, Shippensburg School District School Board President

Rear L to R:  Steve Smith, GBLUES Director/Principal, Cristy Lentz, SASD Business Manager, Dr. Rich Ruth, Executive Vice President, Shippensburg University, Dr. Troy Stevens, Director of Technology for SASD, Dr. Chester Mummau, SASD Superintendent, and School Board member, Dr. Geno Torri.

Purchase a Block for a Cause!

A few years back the Shippensburg Area School District School Board voted to allow a block fundraiser to help improve, repair, replace or purchase vital weight room equipment for our students and student athletes. If you haven’t been in to the Senior High weight room lately I encourage you to take a couple of minutes and see the donations that we have received in the form of blocks from our great Greyhound community. Not only does it help financially with various items in the weight room it makes the room a lot more personal and really improves the overall look of our wonderful facility. A special thank you to Coach Foust and Coach Debias for running, organizing and putting the information on the blocks.  If you or anyone you know would like to purchase a block, please contact Coach Foust, Coach Debias, or the Athletic office.

Go Greyhounds!

Employee Spotlight - June 2017

Mrs. Michele M. Dubbs

Name and current position:  Michele M. Dubbs, Secondary Education Counselor

Building(s) served: Senior High School

High School attended:  Owen J. Roberts High School, Pottstown, PA., 1982

College(s) attended (if applicable):  Bloomsburg University, BA, Psychology 1986, Shippensburg University, MEd, Secondary Counseling, 1988.

Year started at SASD and position:  1990-91, Secondary Ed Counselor

Most unusual incident on the job:  I called the Cumberland County Courthouse Switchboard to be connected and generate a student referral with the Children and Youth Agency.  Simultaneously, a person outside of the district also called into the Courthouse Switchboard to “CALL IN A BOMB THREAT.”  Within 20 minutes, I had Two State Police, The Superintendent, The Principal and a Bomb Squad Representative in My office claiming, it was “I” who called in the Bomb Threat!  Thankfully, they were able to ascertain the actual culprit.  This was obviously prior to the inception of a Computerized Call Center.  Counselors typically do not blow things up, we actively seek to prevent this event from occurring.
Extra assignments: SAT/PSAT Administration, Crisis Plan Assistant, Ship Start Administration, Lunch Duty, Guidance Website development, Counseling Presentations i.e., College/Career Day, and Parchment

Hobbies: Baking (Pies and Scones are my favorite to create), Bicycling and Kayaking, (lessens the stress), Traveling, (to NYC to see my daughter, Kara and with my husband Roy to many places in Europe, US, Caribbean) and Reading (both esoteric and spiritual).

Your hero(s):  Jim Henson and Fred Rogers, “They both created safe and magical spaces for all “children” which enabled us to Dream, Discover, Investigate and Imagine.” They are heroes in my estimation, as they assist a child’s growth and personality development.

Pet peeve:  The action of someone not opening or holding the door for another….

Five minutes with:  My Parents, I miss them each and every day.  They instilled in me respectability, responsibility, a deliberate work ethic, commonsense and sincere compassion.

Favorite movie:  “A Muppet’s Christmas Carol,” The Story line of Redemption being told by Kermit the Frog and his friends is simply splendid! The Musical Score, is outstanding, “Life is filled with sweet surprises, Every day’s a gift”…from, Bless us All.

What would people find surprising about you?  Meeting new people is not always easy for me.  Attending Conferences, and connecting with others on a large scale, makes me uncomfortable.

Paws Applause:

Morgan Benedik, a 2017 graduate of Shippensburg High has been named a National Merit Scholarship Finalist!

Another Greyhound making us proud!

National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC) was established in 1955 — a time in which there was concern that the United States was lagging behind in the cold war scientific race, but the public was indifferent to rewarding intellectual accomplishment. In response, the National Merit Scholarship Program was founded to identify and honor scholastically talented American youth and to encourage them to develop their abilities to the fullest. Through this nationwide competition National Merit Scholarships are awarded to program Finalists and Special Scholarships are awarded to other high performing participants who meet a corporate sponsor's eligibility criteria.

Morgan will be attending West Chester University in the fall!
