Today the Shippensburg Middle School Academic Quiz Bowl team traveled to Lamberton Middle School in Carlisle PA to compete in the regional competition. Sixteen very talented teams gathered and in the end Shippensburg Middle School made it to the quarter finals placing 8th. I am unbelievably proud of every student who participated today. They were kind, respectful and exhibited gracious sportsmanship. I am proud everyday to work for such a fabulous district and days like today remind me why I love Shippensburg. It is much more than a district it's a family. A special thank you goes out to Mrs. Susan Spicka who was kind enough to lend a helping hand and act as a second coach for the day! None of this would be possible without the support of the parents and administration.
Kudos to the Academic Quiz Bowl team and Coaches La Vergne and Spicka!!

Mr. Veley's Students Skype with Author!
The author Chris Grabenstein spent 30 minutes answering students’
questions. He spoke about the book that SAMS is reading Escape from Mr.
Lemeoncellos’s Library, as part of the one school, one book
initiative. He also spoke about the movie version of the book which is
being produced by Nickelodeon, as well as his collaboration with James
Patterson. The students read Escape from Mr. Lemeoncellos’s Library prior
to our conversation with Mr. Grabenstein, and students came prepared to ask
questions. One comment that truly brought a smile to the author came from
August Wildermuth, and he said “I just wanted to thank you for writing such
a wonderful book. Your books have brought me hours of enjoyment and
entertainment.” It was a nice way to wrap up a rare experience.
A
little about the author:
“Chris Grabenstein is the author of the New York Times
bestsellers THE ISLAND OF DR. LIBRIS and ESCAPE FROM MR. LEMONCELLO'S LIBRARY
as well as the co-author (with James Patterson) of the #1 Bestselling series I
FUNNY, HOUSE OF ROBOTS, and TREASURE HUNTERS.”
A special thank you to Mr. Veley for providing this experience to his students at SAMS!! Great way to integrate technology into the classroom and a great way to motivate students to write and read!!
Another excellent Greyhound classroom!!!

wrestlers and their coaches and best wishes in the competition today!!

Shippensburg Area High School -
Incident on February 17, 2017
At approximately 9:00 AM this morning, February 17, 2017, a
Shippensburg Area High School Administrator was notified by a parent that his
daughter reported to him that two Swastika’s were painted on the school Spirit
Rocks. The Administrator immediately
investigated and found the report to be true.
The Maintenance Department was contacted at 9:17 AM and the rocks were
repainted with blue paint prior to 10:00 AM.
The Shippensburg Area School District Administration is
considering this a hate crime and an act of vandalism. A report has been filed with the Shippensburg
Police Department and our high school Administrators are continuing to
investigate the matter. If anyone has
any specific information on the matter, please contact any of the High School
Administrators immediately.
Our schools stand for respect and inclusion, a place where all
are welcome and appreciated. Someone or
some group painted the two swastikas, a long standing symbol of the worst kind
of hate, on our Spirit Rocks. This is personal to our students and staff. It is
deplorable, and we denounce it. A full
investigation is underway. Hate has no
place at this school. We, as a school
community, stand for respect and inclusion, a place where all are free to learn
in a safe and welcoming Greyhound environment.
We have work to do.
Our school wide PBIS programs of promoting positive behavior will
continue and we have been in discussions about bringing in the Rachel’s
Challenge program to our schools in the Fall of 2017. The Rachel’s Challenge program is an
anti-bullying program which educates students about tolerance, diversity,
bigotry, racism, and anti-bullying across a broad spectrum in an effort to
promote a positive school climate through education and understanding.
We ask for the community’s help in educating all citizens
about incidents such as this. Please use
social media to educate others. We are
not in denial, but we also feel strongly that an incident such as this one is
not Shippensburg! We are better than
this and it is not part of our Greyhound pride!
Again, if anyone has further information on the person or
group who committed this act, please contact the high school Administration at
717-530-2700 immediately. Thursday, February 16, 2017

Shippensburg Lions Club
Provides Safety Buckets to Ship
Schools
For more than a year
the Shippensburg Lions Club has been working on a project for the benefit of
the Shippensburg Area School District.
They have been soliciting funds and items to assemble 200 ‘safety
buckets’. These buckets contain items
that can be used in classrooms and other areas of the school buildings in case
of a natural emergency or a school lockdown.
Items to be placed in the 5 gallon buckets were
collected after consultation with the local chief of police and fire chief as
well as the Shippensburg Area School District Superintendent and the school
principals.
Many local businesses and individuals can be
thanked for their support of the project.
The 200 5-gallon buckets were donated by the Shippensburg Lowe’s; the
400+ bottles of water (for washing wounds) were donated by Newville Pepsi
Bottling Plant; the 200+ ace bandages
were donated by the Robert T. Henry Pharmacy;
the toilet paper and trash bags were donated by the Giant grocery store
(by means of gift cards); the 200+ rolls
of paper towels were donated by the Weis Grocery Store; Pague and Fegan Hardware gave a very good
discount on the hammers and duct tape; and the Lions Club bought the 200 fleece
blankets.
There were also a number of financial donations
of at least $100. These donors were
Volvo Construction and Equipment, Century 21 Realty, JLG Industries, Premier
Events Catering and the Robert T. Henry Pharmacy.
The Lions Club is
paid for cloth covers for the buckets that can easily be removed if
needed. The covers were
screen-printed with the logos of the contributors mentioned.

Congratulations to Aaron Ross, Allison Findley, Ally Mankamyer, Nick
Bowers and Emily Loftus traveled to IU to present their STEM
project. The team placed 3rd. They designed a
device that would filter out road salt from entering the ecosystem through
storm drains. The device is an airtight chamber with a vacuum so that
when the pressure is lowered the salt water will boil and leave the salt behind
so the clean water will enter the environment. They have been working on
the project since November.
Kudos to the above named students and their Coach/Advisor, Mr. Swartz!
